Before you read

No official source publishes statistics on why residence permit applications for students are refused. What follows is a list of the mistakes that the official pages (OeAD, the government portal, the University of Graz) warn about, plus points that students who have been through the process stress. We do not claim that these are the most frequent reasons, only that each one can delay or sink an application.

Official warning: "Missing documents can lead to considerable delays." Check the OeAD document list for your case before you go to the embassy.

1. A bank account that is not in your name

The money you prove must be in a bank account or savings book in your own name, accessible from Austria. Students stress this one: an account in your father's or sponsor's name is a classic cause of refusal. Transfer the money to your own account first.

2. No proof of where the money comes from

If the authority asks, you must show the origin of the funds. The OeAD lists:

  • a declaration on the origin of the funds;
  • bank statements for the last 6 months;
  • if the money comes from work, the work contract, the last 6 payslips and, where relevant, the tax assessment;
  • if it comes from parents or sponsors, their declaration that the money is freely at your disposal, plus their bank statements.

Students also mention documents such as a sale contract for gold, a car or farmland when the money comes from a sale. Prepare them in advance.

3. Proving the wrong amount

You must prove the amount for 12 months in advance: €722.58 a month if you are under 24, €1,308.39 if you are 24 or over (2026 figures). In addition, accommodation costs above €386.43 a month must be proven on top. Check the figures on the OeAD page, because they change.

4. Accommodation that does not meet the rule

You need proof of accommodation in Austria for at least 3 months: a rental contract, a usage agreement with a student residence or a right-of-residence agreement. Our guide to student housing explains how to book a room before you travel.

5. Insurance that is not enough

Travel health insurance with at least €30,000 cover, including rescue and repatriation, is only a bridge until you have all-risk insurance. The all-risk proof must be ready at the latest when you collect the permit. A private policy must have no waiting periods, no cost caps and no risk exclusions, and you also need a written confirmation from the insurer. The student self-insurance with ÖGK costs €78.84 a month in 2026.

6. Documents that are out of date or not prepared properly

  • The criminal record must be no older than 3 months when you apply, and it must be certified first and translated afterwards.
  • The photo must be no older than 6 months.
  • Foreign documents must be certified as required, then translated by a generally sworn and court-certified interpreter. For Algeria, the traditional legalisation chain applies, because Austria objected to the Apostille Convention.
  • The authority can ask for further documents, such as a birth certificate.

The University of Graz adds a rule: do not submit documents until they are properly legalised and, where needed, translated.

7. Applying too late

Apply at least three months before you want to travel, and six months if possible. The authority has 90 days to decide, and this period is extended by a further 90 days if documents must be submitted. Legalisation can take several months on top of that. After a positive decision you have three months to apply for the D visa and six months in total to collect the permit.

8. Applying in Austria instead of abroad

Apply at the Austrian embassy for your place of residence in Algeria. Applying in Austria is only possible in certain cases, is not guaranteed, and you cannot wait for the decision in Austria once your visa-free stay or visa has expired.

Two special cases are worth knowing: when you apply in Austria for a preparatory course, the admission letter alone is not enough and you need the enrolment confirmation, and studying only a few individual courses as an extraordinary student is generally not sufficient.

9. Forgetting that the fee is not refundable

The application fee of €218 is due when you apply, and it is not refunded, even if your application is refused or withdrawn. This is why a complete, checked file matters before you pay.

A checklist before you apply

  • Admission letter from the university
  • Passport (original shown, copy of all pages) and a photo from the last 6 months
  • Funds for 12 months in your own account, with proof of origin
  • Accommodation for at least 3 months
  • Travel insurance for entry, and a plan for all-risk insurance
  • Criminal record (under 3 months old, certified and translated)
  • Legalised and translated documents

Check the OeAD list again before you go. It may ask for further documents in your case.

Frequently asked questions

Can my father's account be used?

No. The account must be in your own name. Money from a parent can be transferred to your account, with proof of its origin.

Is the €218 fee refunded if I am refused?

No. The OeAD says the fee is not refunded, including after a refusal or withdrawal.

How early should I apply?

At least three months before you travel, and six months if possible.

What if my documents are incomplete?

Missing documents cause considerable delays. The authority can also ask you to submit them later, which extends the decision period by 90 days.
