Austria

Historic universities, modern cities, a central place in Europe.

Our country guides are written to be factual and general. Specific requirements, deadlines and costs change, so always confirm them with the university and official authorities. We confirm the details that apply to you during your consultation.

Austria offers public universities, universities of applied sciences, private universities and specialised institutions in cities from Vienna to Innsbruck.

Universities and institutions

Austria's higher education landscape includes several institution types:

  • Public universities, broad academic programmes across many fields
  • Universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen), practice-oriented programmes
  • Private universities, a smaller number of accredited institutions
  • Universities of the arts and teacher training colleges for specialised fields

Educational opportunities

Students can typically choose between bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels, with programmes in the humanities, sciences, engineering, business, medicine, arts and more. Some programmes are taught in English, many in German. Which programmes suit you depends on your background and goals.

Admission requirements

General admission usually involves recognition of your prior qualification, proof of language proficiency and, for some programmes, additional selection steps or deadlines. Requirements differ by university, programme and the country where you earned your qualification.

We do not list specific requirements here. We confirm them with you from official sources for each programme.

Language

German is the main language of instruction at many programmes, and proof of German is commonly required for them. A growing number of programmes, especially at master's level, are offered in English, with their own language requirements.

Living costs

Living costs depend on the city, housing type and lifestyle, and tuition conditions depend on the institution and your nationality. We do not publish estimated figures until they are verified against official sources, and we review the current numbers with you during your consultation.

Student life

Students in Austria find vibrant university cities, a strong cultural scene, mountain and lake landscapes within reach and an international student community. Vienna, Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Linz are among the best-known student cities.
